Welcome to the Psychology Undergraduate office! Our Psychology Department Advisors provide a broad array of services to assist our undergraduate Psychology students in their academic development. While our primary role is to advise Psychology majors on strategies for degree completion, we also assist students on a number of related issues including:

  • university policies
  • career opportunities
  • social and personal adjustment to university life
  • preparation for graduate study
  • opportunities to enrich your undergraduate experience, such as study abroad, internships, research and the Psychology Honors Program

Advising for Psychology majors is not mandatory until you are a rising senior. However, we strongly encourage students to meet with an Advisor on a periodic basis to confirm progress in meeting degree requirements. It is especially important for our freshmen and first semester transfer students to make a connection with the Undergraduate office in their first few months on campus so that we can get to know you and help you make the most of your time as a Psychology major.

Advising is usually available without an appointment during our walk-in hours Monday – Friday 10:00-12:00. For issues requiring more time, you can schedule an appointment with an Advisor in the afternoon. Occasionally, Advisors must attend meetings outside their offices or host orientation sessions, so if you are making a special trip to campus, we suggest you call in advance to confirm availability.

We hope that you will look to the Undergraduate Office as your “home away from home” while a Psychology major. Our goal is to help you make your time here at the University of Maryland as productive and intellectually stimulating as possible.

Remember: You are ultimately responsible for satisfying all of your entrance & degree requirements. Please make sure you utilize this website, the Degree Navigator system, BSOS College Advisors, and PSYC Department Advisors in order to ensure that you meet your requirements in a timely manner.

IMPORTANT UNDERGRADUATE POLICIES
The Psychology Undergraduate Advising Office would like to remind students that the following policies are in effect. Please keep this information in mind as you finalize your schedules.

Prerequisite Policy
The Psychology Department enforces all prerequisites. Students must have successfully completed a prerequisite before registering for any class. The Psychology Department reserves the right to administratively drop students who are missing the prerequisite from the course. This policy includes PSYC386, PSYC 478 and PSYC479.

PSYC Course Restriction Policy
Psychololgy majors are allowed to take a maximum of (3) PSYC courses per Fall and Spring semester. If you are not a PSYC major then you can register for PSYC221 or PSYC354 as these courses are not restricted to PSYC majors. All other PSYC courses are restricted to PSYC majors ONLY. Please go on the holdfile if you are interested in taking any other PSYC course as this is the only way to get a seat in a PSYC course.

Oversubscription Policy
In accordance with BSOS College policy, the Psychology Department does not oversubscribe students to any PSYC courses. Students are encouraged to sign up for all courses on their registration date, and must complete any mandatory advising or remove any other registration block BEFORE their registration appointment. Students should remain on waitlists and remember to check in every day during schedule adjustment to ensure they do not lose their spot on the waitlist
