home / Undergraduate / Requirements / Old: B.A. & B.S enrolled before Fall 2009
Beginning with the fall semester 2009, the Psychology Limited Enrollment Program Admission requirements and Psychology Undergraduate Program requirements are changing. Students who matriculated at the University of Maryland or any other University of Maryland System institution or Maryland community college prior to fall 2009 will be considered under the old requirements which are presented on this page. Students who matriculate at the University of Maryland or any other University of Maryland System institution or Maryland community colleges beginning in fall 2009 will be considered to be part of the new requirements. In addition, students who started at an out-of-state institution prior to fall 2009 will be considered under the new requirements. The new requirements can be found here.
The Old Requirements
Psychology majors may select from a wide range of courses to satisfy their major requirements. All students must first take the series of Introductory Psychology, Mathematics, and Lab Science courses required for the Academic Performance Review (APR) or admission to the major if you apply after freshman year.
All majors complete a minimum of 11 Psychology courses totaling at least 35 credits. These include: PSYC100 and PSYC200, one course from each of the four areas of Psychology (I, II, III, IV), two 400-level non-lab courses in PSYC, and two 400-level PSYC labs. The courses that qualify in each of the four areas can be found here.
The major requirements are outlined in the Major Requirements Worksheet. Please consult the list of possible courses in PSYC. It includes required prerequisites and will help you create your academic plan for your major. Please also check individual course availability on Testudo as not all courses are offered every semester.
Please note that Psychology is a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP). That means that the academic requirements for entering and remaining in the PSYC major are more rigorous than for non-LEP majors. Please review the LEP Requirements carefully.
The Major Requirements Worksheet is a great way to see all of the Psychology major requirements on one page.
Feel free to contact a PSYC Advisor or BSOS College Advisor if you have any questions!
