Degree Requirements

Students earning an undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Maryland will take courses in a wide array of backgrounds. Our program is divided into three themes which include: Mind, Brain, & Behavior, Mental Health and Interventions, and Social, Developmental, & Organizational Sciences (SDOS). Students will take courses that apply to each of the three themes in order to gain a broad perspective of the field of psychology.

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Requirements
The psychology undergraduate program provides majors a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology upon completion of the required coursework. This coursework includes:
Students must complete 11 courses (35 credits) in order earn their degree in psychology. The courses are:

  • PSYC 100 – Introduction to Psychology
  • PSYC 200 – Statistical Methods in Psychology
  • PSYC 300 – Research Methods in Psychology (4 credit lab
  • A minimum of 2 courses from each of the three thematic areas:
    - Mind, Brain, & Behavior
    - Mental Health & Interventions
    - Social, Developmental, & Organizational Sciences
  • Two 400 level non-lab course
  • One 400 level lab course

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Requirements
Students also have the option of earning a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.), generally regarded as a more advanced degree in the field. Students who wish to pursue the B.S. must complete the B.A. requirements above and at least 5 additional advanced courses (17 credits) in mathematics and science.
