Information for Researchers

All research in the psychology department must be pre-approved by the campus IRB. All applications for IRB approval from psychology researchers are submitted online. To submit your application please begin here.

The psychology department provides a pool of participants for researchers in the department. Once your study has been approved by the campus IRB, please email the Sona system administrator with your request for a researcher account on the Sona System. Your request should include your name, graduate advisor, and faculty sponsor (if different). The administrator will send you a logon ID and a password that will enable you to create studies to post online.

Please contact the Sona administrator if you need to preselect participants for your studies. The department has a prescreening questionnaire that can be used for this purpose.

Before you begin your research please visit the campus IRB site to review campus policies.

It is essential that you provide a complete debriefing for every participant. The debriefing should explain the purposes and methods of the study, the results you expect to obtain, how your data will be used, as well as explaining the need for any deception that occurred. Remember that the participants are expected to learn something about psychology from their participation in your research. A full debriefing is essential in achieving this goal.

If you wish to and are able to pay participants for their participation, please contact the Sona administrator about posting your experiment on the paid Sona systems site.

Once you log into the Sona system you can find the answers to many questions about posting studies in the “Frequently Asked Questions” link in your researcher home page. To post an experiment, please follow, in order, these instructions:

1. Create your on-line experiment and make it visible to participants

Instructions:

  • Log in to the Sona system
  • Click on “Add New Study”
  • Select the type of study you wish to create
  • Enter the basic information
    1. The Sona administrator will assign you a study title that will be a numeric value
    2. Keep your detailed information within 50 words or less
    3. Make sure you enter your correct IRB code AND the correct expiration date for your IRB
  • Alter any of the advanced setting to fit your needs for the study
  • Review all your responses
  • Click on “Save Changes”
  • Review your study information
  • Click on “send a request” to e-mail the Sona administrator to make your study visible to participants

2. Set up your experiment schedule

Instructions:

* Click on “My Studies”
* Click on the study for which you want to post time slots
* Click on “View/Administer Time Slots”
* Click on either “Add a Timeslot” or “Add Multiple Timeslots” depending on whether you want to post one or multiple timeslots
* Enter the date, start time, and any other relevant information that is requested
* Click on “Add”
* When adding new times, if you see the following error message: "You are at the credit limit for this experiment. You cannot add more times," it means that you have used all the credit hours that were awarded to you. You should request additional credit hours from the Sona administrator
* If a student signs up for your experiment from the Sona System, an e-mail confirmation will be sent to the student automatically and an email reminder will be sent the day before they signed up to participate.

3. Set any restrictions on who can participate in your study

This can be useful if you wish to restrict potential participants based on some known criteria. For example, if you previously performed mass testing and wish only to allow people who attained a particular score to participate in your experiment you could set a “sign up password” for your experiment and then provide that code only to people who meet your eligibility criteria, or you may want to restrict you study to a particular group students based on the class they are enrolled in such as restricting your study to PSCY 100 students.

Instructions:

* When creating a study click “Add New Study”

1. After entering all the “Basic Information” scroll down to the “Advanced Settings”
2. Enter or Click on any of the restrictions you want placed on students signing up for your study
3. Click on “Add This Study”

* If you have already created a study and want to place restrictions as to who can sign up for the study after it has been created then:

1. Click on “My Studies”
2. Click on the study for which you want to place sign-up restrictions
3. Click on “Change Study Information”
4. Scroll down to “Advanced Settings”
5. Enter or Click on any of the restrictions you want placed on students signing up for your study
6. Click on “Save Changes”

4. Set any restrictions on when participants may sign up for your study

You may wish to prevent participants from signing up for your study just moments before it is scheduled to begin. You can specify a time, after which it will not be possible to sign up for a session.

Instructions:

* When creating a study click on “Add New Study”

1. After entering all the “Basic Information” scroll down to the “Advanced Settings”
2. Next to “Participant Sign Up Deadline” enter the time you would like, in hours, prior to which participants must sign up

* If you want to set a time restrictions in sign ups for a study already created

1. Click on “My Studies”
2. Click on the study for which you want to place sign-up restrictions
3. Click on “Change Study Information”
4. Scroll down to “Advanced Settings”
5. Next to “Participant Sign Up Deadline” enter the time you would like, in hours, prior to which participants must sign up

5. Check your experiment schedule

Instructions:

* Click on “My Studies”
* Next to the study that you want to view the schedule for, click on “Timeslots”

6. Manage your experiment by assigning credit and penalty

* As participants participate in your experiment you will need to assign credits and penalties for their participation. From the “Timeslots” page you can see how many people, and who has signed up for a particular appointment time. After the appointment start time has passed, you may Credit or Penalize the participant by:

1. Clicking on “My Studies”
2. Go to study for which you need to administer the credit or penalty
3. Go to “View/Administer Time Slots”
4. Click on “Modify” next to the time slots for which you want to administer the credit or penalty
5. Click on “Credit Granted” next to the participants name to administer credit or “No-Show (Penalty Assessed)” to administer a penalty
6. Click on “Update Sign-Ups”

* After participants participate in your experiment you must assign them a Credit or Penalty as soon as possible. This is the only way participants can receive credit, so it is important to give them their credit in a timely manner.
* Once a participant signs up for an appointment in your experiment you will have the option to cancel his or her appointment from the “Timeslots” page. This is a powerful option because it lets you cancel appointments subjects have made without notifying them or obtaining their permission. If you do use this option be sure that you and the subject have agreed to it beforehand. The intended use of the Cancel option is to allow experimenters to free up an appointment when a subject cancels by contacting the experimenter directly rather than by using the website. Note that an e-mail confirmation of the cancellation will be sent to the student automatically.
* A participant has the right to leave the experiment at any time. If the participant chooses to leave prior to signing the Informed Consent document, you cannot give them a penalty and take away a point, but neither should you award them a credit. If a participant has already signed the Informed Consent document and then withdraws from the study, the experimenter has the discretion to award credit if he or she judges the withdrawal to have been made in good faith, but he or she is equally not required to assign a credit.

If you have further questions, please email the Sona administrator.
